To utilize words associated with feelings to trigger a response from the reader.
Foreshadowing
To show a glimpse into future events
Imagery
Consists of descriptive language for the reader to better imagine the world of the piece of literature. Imagery draws on the five senses, namely the details of taste, touch, sight, smell, and sound.
metaphor
A literary device in which direct comparisons are made between two unlikely objects.
Onomatopoeia
The use of words that imitate sounds.
Example: Boom, Smash, Crunch
Pathetic fallacy
A type of personification where emotions are given to a setting, an object, or the weather.
Example: The Trees closed in on me with intimidation
Personification
Gives human attributes/characteristics of an animal (non-human)
Example: The math exam was taunting me.
Repetition
Repetition is used when two words I used twice in the text.
Example: If you think you can do it, you can do it.
Rhyme
Rhyme is used when there is a correspondence of sound between words or endings of words.
Example: Jerry didn’t even know when to talk. He was unsure of where to walk. He felt they were watching him like a hawk.
Slang
Casual language in everyday speech in writing.
Example Cuz, Fam, Wa gwan
Simile
A comparison of something using like or as.
Example: He was as brave as a lion.
“Charles” - Shirley Jackson
Charles is the story of a rebellious little boy who has just started to explore his true identity. The story was written by Shirley Jackson, who omits the names of most characters to focus the reader’s attention on Laurie and his alter ego
“Lamb to the Slaughter” - Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl’s ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ is a short story about the murder of police detective Patrick Maloney by his wife Mary. Driven to homicide after her husband’s unexpected announcement that he’s leaving her and their unborn child, Mary quickly regains her senses after fatally killing him with the leg of lamb
“Examination Day” - Henry Slesar
The setting takes place in the future, and the main character is a boy called Dickie. In Dickie’s world, the government control everything and does not want people to be intelligent so that they won’t seek revolution
