A defined, given position in society
Role
Behavior expected of a status
Ascribed Status
Assigned based on qualities outside of our control; Teenager, Daughter, Albino
Achieved Status
Acquired through direct efforts; Class President, Doctor
Master Status
The most influential part of a person’s social identity
Aggragate
A group of people who are in the same place at the same time, but have nothing else in common
Role strain
Trying to fulfill too many expectations of the same role
Role conflict
When fulfilling one role puts strain on maintaining another
Group think symptoms
Feeling of invincibility
Unquestioned belief
Rationalization
Direct pressure
Ignoring your own ideas
Illusion that everyone agrees
Group think
A phenomenon in which the desire for conformity in a group leads to irrational decisions
Instrumental Leaders
Task oriented, looking to reach the goal
Expressive Leaders
Emotional oriented, work to keep the group together and tap into creativity
Ashe experiment
Tested conformity- Had actors all state the same wrong answer to see if testers would do the same even when they knew it was wrong. Proved informational and normative conformity
Milgram Experiment
Had people administer “shocks” to actors when they gave an incorrect response. The actors yelled in pain but testers were told they were fine. Was to see if people would obey professionals unconditionally
Bystander effect
The greater the number of people present, the less likely individuals are to help someone in distress.
