Grants citizenship to persons born in U.S. And guarantees equal protection under law.

Ensures voting rights regardless of race

What is the Election of 1876?
Samuel Tilden (Democrat) from New York went against Rutherford B. Hayes (republican) from Ohio
Hayes wins electoral college
Tilden wins popular vote
SC, LA, and FL in dispute which would change the outcome
After the election of 1876 what followed?
The compromise of 1877
What is the compromise of 1877?
Southern democrats agree to Hayes being president but had to return some favors to the south such as:
- Have federal troops leave
- The south gets money
- southern becomes postmaster general
What is the outcome of the compromise of 1877?
African Americans lose rights due to Jim Crow Laws
What are the Jim Crow Laws?
State and local laws in the U.S. that enforced segregation. They were passed to discriminate against African Americans. Supposed to be separate but equal.
What does the 13th amendment do?
The thirteenth amendment bans slavery.
What are some problems after the civil war?
Farms and plantations were destroyed
40% of the Souths livestock was killed
Half of the farm machinery was wrecked
Factories were destroyed
What is the ten percent plan and who’s plan is it?
The ten percent plan was made by Abraham Lincoln to pardon the confederate states of America
He wanted them to take an oath of loyalty and agree that slavery was illegal
He never got to see his plan though because he was shot at fords theatre
What is the amnesty plan and who made it?
The amnesty plan was made by president Andrew Johnson his plan was much like the 10% plan.
He wanted to pardon the CSA and have them swear allegiance to the US, but he excluded some CSA leaders. He ratified the 13th amendment and held new elections and rejoin the union.
What was the radical republicans plan?
The radical republican plan wanted to punish the south unlike the 10% plan and the amnesty plan. They wanted to prevent CSA leaders from returning to power. They wanted also made the Republican Party powerful in the south. Government to help freed African Americans achieve equality.
