Define exegesis
Exegesis: drawing out the true meaning from Scripture

Typology: studying how things in the Old Testament point to things in the New Testament

Protoevangelium: “first Gospel”; the first promise of a Redeemer

Abraham: “father of a multitude”; chosen by God to be the father of the Hebrew nation

Natural law: ability to know good from evil which is written on the human heart

Messiah: Hebrew for “anointed one”
Define Christ
Christ: “Anointed one” in Greek
What does it mean that the Scriptures have dual authorship? What are its implications?
There are 2 people that are credited with authorship of the Bible: God and man. God worked through and inspired various humans to write what he desired. But the human author still had full use of his own faculties.
What are the two main sense of Scripture? Define them.
1) Literal sense: the direct meaning of a Scripture passage
2) Spiritual sense: the deeper meaning put in Scripture by the Holy Spirit
What are the three spiritual senses? Define them.
1) Allegorical sense: shows how people or events in Salvation history parallel other people and events
2) Moral sense: looks at certain heroes in the Bible as models for our lives
3) Anagogical sense: makes clear the knowledge of Heaven and points to the end times
What is typology? What are types? What’s an anti-type?
Typology is studying how people, events, etc. in the Old Testament point to people, events, etc. in the New Testament. A type is a person or event in the Old Testament that points to an anti-type, which is a person or event in the New Testament which parallels a type.
What does the word “Protoevangelium” mean? What is it (the Bible verse)? What’s its significance?
“Protoevangelium” means “first Gospel”. It says, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; They will strike (bruise) at your head while you strike at their heel.” (Genesis 3:15). It is the first promise of a Redeemer for the human race. It’s a promise for a victory of good over evil, of mercy over sin, of life over death, of God over Satan.
Who are “the woman”, “the serpent”, and “her offspring” referring to in Genesis 3:15 in the literal sense and the allegorical sense?
Literal sense: "The woman" - Eve "The serpent" - Satan "Her offspring" - humanity Allegorical sense: "The woman" - Mary "The serpent" - Satan "Her offspring" - Jesus Christ
Who are the New Adam and the New Eve? What similarities/differences do we see with the first Adam/Eve?
Jesus Christ is the New Adam:
Son, priest, prophet, king, bridegroom/ victor (vs. failure)/ obedient (vs. disobedient)/ result = life (vs. death)
Mary is the New Eve:
Mother of God and the Church (vs. all the living)/ born without sin/ obedient (vs. disobedient)/ her YES to God’s plan = life (vs. Eve’s NO = death)
What is a covenant? What were the Old Testament covenants preparing for?
A covenant is a mutual oath which makes a family. They were preparing the way for the new and eternal covenant.
Why did God send the flood? Why did he choose Noah and his family?
God sent the flood to wipe out all living things on earth because they no longer had a desire for good. But Noah was “a righteous man, blameless in his generation.”
What are some examples of types in the story of Noah?
1)40 days and 40 nights = 40 years of wandering, 40 days in the desert, Lent
Noah:
Sacrifice of thanksgiving (clean animals)
Savior to his family and the animals
Ark = saving vessel
New and Eternal
Sacrifice of Eucharist (Christ, the unblemished lamb)
Savior of the world
Salvation comes through the Church
What are the terms of the covenant between God and Noah’s family?
1) God promises to never again destroy all life on earth by flood
2) He tells Noah and his sons to be fruitful and multiply
3) Plants and animals are under their dominion
4) Murder and eating animals with the blood still in them is forbidden
What are some of the major sins from the book of Genesis? From what stories do they come?
