A symbol (such as a number or letter) written above and immediately to the left or right of another character.
place value
The value of where a digit is located in a number. For example, in 457, the 4 is in the hundreds place, 5 is in the tens place, and 7 is in the ones place.
compose numbers
Make a whole from parts.
decompose numbers
Break down a whole into parts.
front-end estimation
Only rounding the numbers in the place furthest to the left (greatest place value).
estimation
Approximating a value for a calculation.
operations
A mathematical calculation or process. The most common are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
base
The number multiplied by itself when paired with an exponent.
standard form
Routine way of writing a number.
base-10 numeral
System of 10 digits (0 through 9) and their place values. It also includes decimal points (when applicable).
rounding
A method of estimating in order to make working with a number easier.
expanded form
Number written as the sum of each digit multiplied by the numerical equivalency of its place value.
exponent
Sometimes called a power, it is a number that shows how many times the base is multiplied by itself
multiplication
An operation performed on two numbers that results in a product. Often denoted by the dot sign, ·.
