Who developed the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights?
The Australian Commission of Safety and Quality in Healthcare (federal govt)
What areas does the Charter respond to ?
public hospitals, private hospitals, general practice and other community environments
What is the aim of the Charter?
to allow patients, families, carers and service providers to have a common understanding of the right of people recieving health care.
What are the three guiding principles of the Charter?
- Everyone has the right to be able to access healthcare and this right is essentail for the Charter to be meaningful
- The Australian government commits to international agreements about human rights (recognising everyone’s right to have the highest possible standard of p and m h/w)
- Aus is a society made up of people with different cultures, that need to be respected and acknowledged.
What are the basic rights of people accessing healthcare in Australia?

What are the patient rights of the Australian Charter of Health Care Rights?
info about their diagnosis and costs of the proposed treatments, visiting arragnements for family/friends seek other medical opinions privacy/ access to own medical records treatment with respect and dignity care and support, comment or complaint

provide information about their past and present illnesses
ask questions when they do not understand
follow instructions

What is Medical confidentiality or doctor-patient confidentiality?
A set of rules that means anything discussed between a doctor or a patient must be kept private.
What are exceptions to Privacy in medical care?
if the patient is a child
carers may be authorized to access the information of adults under their care.
What are the two exemptions to privacy laws?
if the patient or someone elses’ h/w or safety are seriously threatened.
