Monarchy
Political system in which one person is the head of state for life, or until they abdicate the position -> normally inherited
Parliament
Legislative body where elected representatives debate, create and modify laws within jurisdiction. Scrutinise the actions of the executive government.
Commitment to a rules-based order
Political actor’s adherence to the framework of norms and laws that shape the operation of if the broader political system.
Constitutional Government
Political system’s ability to follow the body of laws and rules that set out how a state or country must be governed
Political culture
Ingrained attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviours that shape how individuals and groups perceive and participate in political processes, including expectations around the behaviour of other actors.
Constitutional Monarchies
Monarch as head of state within the parameters of the constitution, with limited powers. While elected government is primary political authority.
Liberal Democracy
Power of government is limited and counterbalanced by the rights and freedoms of individuals protected by constitutions, established norms and institutions.
Responsible government
Expectation that executive governments must be answerable to parliaments and that their decisions and actions must be exposed to public scrutiny.
Transparency
Idea that operation of government should be visible to the people.
