Unit 2 - Organistaion of the Organism Flashcards
Ciliates Cells
Tiny hairs that line trachea and other passageways. In the trachea and bronchi they beat to move mucus up and out of the airway.
Root Hair Cells
Have long thin extensions to increase the surface area to maximise the absorption of water and ions from the soil.
Xylem Vessel Cells
- Water and ion transport
- Gives structural support to the plant stem and leaves.
Pallisade Mesophyll Cells
Tightly packed layer of cells close to the surface of the leaf. Packed with chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
Nerve Cells
Conduction of nerve impulses. Have thin long extensions that are insulated in parts to increase speed of the impulse being transmitted.
Red Blood Cells
Contain haemoglobin that carries oxygen. Adapted to their function with biconcave shape and no nucleus to provide larger surface area.
Sperm Cell
Contains male genetic information. Has tail (flagellum) adapted for swimming.
Egg Cell
Contains female genetic information. Large size, contains yolk as energy store.
Tissue
A group of cells with similar structures, working together to perform a shared function.
Organ
A structure made up of a group of tissues, working together to perform specific functions.
Organ System
A group of organs with related functions, working together to perform body functions.
