Unit 2 Organic Chem Flashcards
Boiling Points
Alkanes
Aromatic
Alkenes/Alkynes
Ethers
Aldehydes/Ketones
Alcohols
Carboxylic acid
Estérification
Condensation reaction between an alcohol and carboxylic acid; releases water
Hydrolysis
Ester splits into carboxylic acid and alcohol w/ addition of water
Saturated hydrocarbon
Alkane; all bonds b/w C atoms are single bonds
Unsaturated hydrocarbons
Alkenes or alkynes; have double or triple C bonds, respectively
Stereoisomers
Have same mind and # of atoms bonded in same order but different arrangements in space
Cis isomer
Alkyl groups located on same side of double bond
Trans isomer
Groups located on opposite sides of double bond
Hydrogenations
Addition reaction, add hydrogen to break double bonfs
Hydro-halogénation
Adds H to one side of the double bond and halogen to other side (“rich get richer”)
Hydration
Add water to unsaturated hydrocarbon; produces alcohol
Halogénation
Similar to hydrogenation, but add halogens instead
Combustion reactions
Add oxygen and oxygen to alcohol, produces co2 and H2O
Controlled oxidation
Reacts alcohol with oxidizing agent (O) to produce aldehydes (w/ primary alcohol) and h20/ ketones (w/ secondary alcohol
