Unit 2 - Multicellular Organism Flashcards
What is the name for a cell who’s structure is adapted to carry out a specific function?
Specialised
What is a group of cells called that are specialised to perform a particular function?
Tissue
What is allele?
Different forms of same gene
What so meant by the term Heterozygous?
Has different alleles of a gene. For example: Hh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Heterozygous always has two different letter One SMALL and One BIG)
What is meant by the term Homozygous?
Has identical alleles of a gene. For eg: HH, hh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Homozygous always has the SAME LETTERS either Big HH or small hh)
What is meant by the term Genotype?
The allies an organism has. For eg: HH, hh, Hh
What is meant by the term phenotype?
The physical appearance of an organism. For example: Tall, small
What is meant by the term Dominant?
An allies that always shows its self in the heterozygous genotype.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Dominant is always the BIG LETTERS like: HH)
What is meant by the term recessive?
Doesn’t appear in the phenotype unless it is paired with another of the same.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Recessive is always the SMALL LETTERS like: hh)
What is meant by the term continuous variation?
•A range of differences that flow smoothly from one extreme to another. For eg: height, weight.
What is meant by the term discrete variation?
•When values from 2 or more distinct group. You either have the characteristics or you don’t. For eg: ear lobe types, fingerprints.
What is meant by the term polygenic inheritance?
•More than one gene
What is the function of egg cell? Explain it fully.
- Function- Reproduction
* Explanation- Haploid to allow fusion at fertilisation producing a diploid zygote.
What is the function of sperm cell? Explain it fully.
- Function- Reproduction
* Explanation- Tail to swim and mitochondria for energy.
What is the function of red blood cell? Explain it fully.
- carries oxygen
* contains haemoglobin and carries oxygen as oxyhemoglobin.
