UNIT 2: MAPS & GIS: PROJECTIONS & COORDINATE SYSTEMS Flashcards
Rendering of locations on the curved earth’s surface onto a flat map
Map projection
3 developable surfaces
Azimuthal (polar projection), cylindrical (full earth/equatorial), conic (hemisphere)
5 types of projections
Conformal -shape, equivalent/equal area - area, equidistant - distance, direction - from pt of origin, compromise projections (mixing of the elements)
Mercator, lambert conformal conic, albers equal area, sinusoidal (equal area), Plate Carree Projection (Equidistant/directions), Azimuthal, Robinson (old Nat Geo standard), Goodes Homolosine
Common projections in GIS
Geographic projection, lambert conformal conic (long e/w, good for U.S.), Transverse Mercator (long n/s, good for Florida)
Most common GIS Projections
