UNIT 1 Flashcards
Computer-based system for collection, maintenance, storage, analysis, output, & distribution of spatial data & information (output is often in the form of maps)
Geographic Information Systems
What type of data do we use?
Addresses, xy coordinates (map & spatial data)
Combining several themes into one composite map (overlaying maps & map data on top of one another)
Overlay
Site suitability/determining appropriate area for land use. Public transportation, where to go on trips, navigating trails, locating crisis areas, where your food comes from, business application/marketing, many more.
What kinds of questions can we answer using GIS?
6 general categories of application
- location (what is it? where?) 2. pattern (what spatial patterns exist? 3. Condition (where & how is it?) 4. Trend (what has changed since? When?) 5. Modeling (what if..process occurred? 6. Tell the story (map or other such output)
Map that shoes info about a specific subject or theme?
Thematic map
Ways of thinking about geographic data: GIS, Remote Sensing, Cartography, Computer science, computer engineering, surveying, GPS
GISceince
4 components of GIS
Spatial data/database, software, person & methods/procedures, computer (hardware) - GPS, Digitizing tablet, etc.
5 key ingredients of GIS software
Data entry, data management, data exploration &/or visualization, data analysis, output
Parts of ArcGIS
ArcMap, ArcCatolog (like finder or explorer for data), ArcToolbox (analysis, conversions, projections, etc.)
