Unit 2 List 2 Experimental Desgin Flashcards
Claim
statements in science supported by data and research
Constant
The factors that do not change during the experiment.
Evidence
information collected via rigorous scientific methods that changes their belief in the truth of factual claims of the first to the fourth kind.
Experimental bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment.
Experimental control
a scientific test done under controlled conditions, meaning that just one (or a few) factors are changed at a time, while all others are kept constant.
Experimental procedure
the manner in which an experiment is carried out
Hypothesis
a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Manipulated variable
a factor that is purposefully and specifically changed by the experimenter
Qualitative data
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers.
Quantitative data
data that can be counted or measured in numerical values
Reason
allows us to develop new technologies, solve practical problems, and make informed decisions
Responding variable
the part of an experiment that a scientists measures and observes closely for a change or a response
Scientific method
the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation.
Scientific model
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes
Scientific question
one where an investigation can be designed and completed to find out the answer without having to do multiple, entirely different investigations to get there
Scientific theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment
Trends in data
the general change in a variable with time
Valid experiment
how well you have controlled your experimental variables in order to maintain a fair test.
