Unit 2 List 1 Chemistry Flashcards
Atoms
Atoms are the basic particles of the chemical elements
Molecules
A group of atoms combined together
Substances
A pure form of matter
Homogeneous Mixtures
a gaseous, liquid or solid mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample
Heterogeneous Mixtures
a mixture with a non-uniform composition
Chemical properties
A chemical property is any of a material’s properties that becomes evident during, or after, a chemical reaction
Physical Properties
a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance
Isotopes
members of a family of an element that all have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
Elements
a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic.
Compounds
a substance made from two or more different elements that have been chemically joined.
Reactants
raw materials that react with one another and form products.
Products
The chemical substances which are formed due to a chemical reaction between two or more chemical substances
Hydrogen Bonds
interaction involving a hydrogen atom located between a pair of other atoms having a high affinity for electrons.
Covalent Bonds
the mutual sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms.
Ionic Bonds
type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound.
Cation
an ion with positive charge, which means it has more protons (positively-charged particles) than electrons (negatively-charged particles)
Anion
negatively charged ions
Periodic table-groups
a column in the periodic table of the chemical elements
periodic table-rows
Elements in the same row are in the same period
Valence Electrons
an electron that ‘lives’ in the last electron shell (or valence shell) of an atom
PH scale
measures how acidic an object is
Acids
A chemical that gives off hydrogen ions in water and forms salts by combining with certain metals.
Bases
substances that, when dissolved in water, have a pH level greater than seven, taste bitter, and feel slippery.
