Unit 1 List 2 Experimental Design Flashcards
claim
a generalization based on a reported statistically significant effect.
Constant
The factors that do not change during the experiment
Evidence
information collected via rigorous scientific methods that changes their belief in the truth of factual claims of the first to the fourth.
Experimental bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment.
Experimental control
an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other variables.
Experimental procedure
the manner in which an experiment is carried out.
Hypothesis
an assumption, an idea that is proposed for the sake of argument so that it can be tested to see if it might be true
Manipulated variable
a factor that is purposefully and specifically changed by the experimenter.
Qualitative data
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers
Quantitative data
measures of values or counts and are expressed as numbers
Reason
the ability to recognize and understand the scientific method, concepts, processes, and applications used in the pursuit of knowledge.
Responding variable
what the scientist measures as a result of the test variable
Scientific method
making an observation, forming a hypothesis, making a prediction, conducting an experiment and finally analyzing the results.
Scientific model
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes
Scientific question
where an investigation can be designed and completed to find out the answer without having to do multiple, entirely different investigations to get there.
Scientific theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.
Trends in data
the general change in a variable with time
Valid experiment
relates to the experimental method and how appropriate it is in addressing the aim of the experiment
