unit 2 lesson 1 Flashcards
environment
which is all the conditions, circumstances, and influencers surrounding and impacting an organism
natural resources
those elements of nature that have value, such as timber, soil, fresh water, or a mineral deposit.
pollutants
substances introduced into the environment that have harmful effects or that make a resource less useful.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
This agency encourages policy that benefits the environment and helps regulate businesses so that the pollutants they create do not overwhelm the environment.
pesticides
chemicals designed to kill insects, and fertilizers.
Erosion
the wearing away of soil, usually due to either water or wind.
herbicides
chemicals designed to kill certain plants, like weeds
Air is another essential natural resource that needs to be free of pollutants for agriculture to thrive.
In terms of its chemistry, air is 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen and 1% a mix of other gasses. If the level of oxygen in air falls below 21%, it becomes difficult to sustain life.
ozone layer.
This layer of air forms a barrier between the Earth’s atmosphere (what we breathe) and the sun. It is about 15 miles above the Earth’s surface.
