Lesson 03 Other Environmental Elements Flashcards
Parasitism
This term describes relationships in which one organism lives off another, often to the other’s detriment. If you have ever treated your dog for fleas, ticks, or heartworm, this is the kind of relationship you were trying to avoid.
Mutualism
If two animals have a relationship that benefits them both, it is known as mutualism.
Predation
Like parasitism, this relationship is an advantage for one side but not the other. Predation is when one animal eats another. While this is bad news for the prey in the relationship, having predators is good for the environment because it keeps populations in check.
Commensalism
In this relationship, two animals interact with each other, but it is neither positive nor negative for either.
Competition
If two different species are going after the same food source, competition describes their relationship.
