Unit 2 Lesson 1 Flashcards
Energy
The ability to cause change
There are 2 types of energy: kinetic energy
potential energy
Kinetic Energy
Energy that is due to motion
The amount of kinetic energy depends on its mass and speed.
It increases as the mass increases
It increases as the speed increases
Potential Energy
Energy that an object has due to its position, condition, or chemical composition
What are the forms of energy?
Mechanical Energy = kinetic energy + potential energy
Sound Energy = kinetic energy caused by vibration of particles in a medium such as steel, water, or air
Electromagnetic Energy = energy transmitted through space in electromagnetic waves. Examples: x-rays, microwaves, sun
Electrical Energy = energy that results from the position or motion of charged particles . Examples: lights
What are the forms of energy? (Continued)
Chemical Energy = a form of potential energy which is stored in the bonds between atoms.Depends on the kinds of atoms and their arrangements
Example: batteries, matches, food
Thermal Energy = the kinetic energy of the particles in an object. The faster the molecules move, the more thermal energy. The more particles you have, the more thermal energy.
Nuclear Energy - comes from the nucleus of an atom. The energy from the sun is nuclear energy
Energy Transformation
When energy changes from 1 form into another form
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It only changes form
Heat
The energy transferred from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature
Closed System
A group of objects that transfers energy only to one another
