How do you prepare food in a hygienic way?
A
- Wash your hands with soap and warm water before touching raw meat, fish or poultry.
- Wash your hands after every trip to the bathroom.
- Clean cutting boards, surfaces and knives with hot, soapy water.
- Wash all fruits and vegetables well before you eat them.
- Thoroughly cook chicken and pork, fish and eggs to kill bacteria that make you ill.
- Keep food either hot or cold. Bacteria can multiply quickly at room temperature and can cause food to go bad.

A
Bacteria are tiny organisms that live in food.

How do you store food properly?
A
- Store all dry foods in a cool, dark place.
- Onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes and squashes will keep for a few weeks in a cool, dark place.
- Keep other vegetables, meat, fish and dairy products in a cold place, like a fridge, if you are not going to eat them straight away.
- Always check the ‘best before’ date on food packages to make sure you don’t store the food for too long.
- If you are not going to eat meat or fish within two days you should store it in a freezer.
- If frozen food thaws, use it immediately. Do not refreeze food.
