Unit 2 Exam Flashcards
How. much of the output of the sun is outside the visible range and unavailable for photosynthesis?
60%
How much is reflected and transmitted?
8%
How much is converted into heat?
8%
how much yeild is in the form of carbohydrates?
4%
How much energy is lost due to photrespiration and other process?
20%
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
CO2 + H20 —> C6H12O6 + O2
What is oxidised in photosynthesis?
CO2 to C6H12O6
What is oxidised in photosynthesis?
CO2 to C6H12O6
What is reducted in Photosynthesis?
H20 to O2
What does reduction mean?
The gain of electrons
- hydrogen is gained or oxygen is lost
What is the electron donor for photosynthesis reactions?
Water
What does oxidation mean?
The loss of electrons
What does the loss of water produce?
electrons, protons, and carbon. The electrons and protons are incorporated into carbohydrate product and O2 is a by-product
What is photosynthesis?
The oxidation of water with carbon produced as a byproduct throught thr electron transport train to the reduction of CO2

Where does Light-reactions occur and what are they
Oxidation - it occurs ON the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast. Light-reactions are the first process of photosynthesis in which solar energy is converted into Chemical energy - ATP NADPH
Where does the calvin cycle occur and what is it?
Reduction - occurs IN the stroma that the Thylakoids float in and is where carbon is fixed into sugars
Identify the Chloroplast and all the parts

What is the Calvin cycles 3 main steps?
- Carboxylation, 2. Reduction, 3. Regeneration
What is Carboxylation
The addition os RuBP and then catalyzed by rubisco
Wht is Reduction in the calvin cycle
NADPH transfers high energy electrons
What is regeneration in the Calvin cycle
3-Carbon compounds are reorganised and combined to produce RuBP which is destroyed in carboxylation
What are starch granules
Excess carbohydrates are converted into starch and stored. The formation of them provides a source of carbohydrates that can be used at night or in the absence of light.
