UNIT 2: COVID-19 & Heritable Conditions Flashcards
What is normal range for body temperature?
36.1°C– 38 °C
Hypothermia body temperature range? What are symptoms?
less than 36°C
symptoms:
Body systems start to shut down and can lead to death
Especially see in elderly
High temperature range? What are the symptoms?
More than 38.1°C
Symptoms:
Infections
Fever (pyrexia)
What are the 4 main vital signs and 3 further vital signs that NEWS checks for?
Body Temperature
Pulse rate
Respiration Rate
Blood Pressure
Oxygen Saturation (two scales, usually use scale 1) Consciousness Air or Oxygen – do they have extra oxygen?
What is Tachycardia? What are the symptoms?
high pulse rate of More than 100 bpm
symptoms include: Dizziness/Lightheaded Palpitations Chest pain (angina) Shortness of breath Cardiac arrest (extreme cases)
Normal pulse rate range
51-90 bpm
What is Bradycardia? What are the symptoms?
Low pulse rate of fewer than 50bpm
Symptoms include: Dizziness/lightheaded Confusion Fainting Fatigue Shortness of breath Cardiac arrest (extreme cases)
5 Possible levels of consciousness
- Alert: Patient is fully awake, spontaneous open eyes and respond to voice.
- Confusion: New onset or worsening confusion.
- Voice: Patient responds to voice stimulus (e.g., will opens eyes, grunt)
- Pain: Patient responds to pain stimulus, but do response to pain (e.g., grimaces from trapezius (shoulder) squeeze)
- Unresponsive: No response to voice or pain.
What is Bradypnea? What are the causes? What are symptoms?
Respiratory rate of Less than 11 breaths per min
Causes:
Lung Disorders
Use of Sedatives
Symptoms:
Can Lead to blue tinge on skin due to reduced oxygen
Normal Respiratory Rate
12-20 breaths per min
What is Tachypnoea? What are causes and symptoms?
Respiratory rate of More than 20 breath per min
Causes:
High levels of CO2
Or low levels of O2 in blood
Symptoms:
Can Lead to blue tinge on skin due to reduced oxygen
What is low Blood pressure? What are causes and Symptoms?
90/60 mmHg
Causes:
Dehydration
Symptoms: Dizziness/lightheaded Loss of balance Fainting Blurred vision Confusion
How to measure blood pressure?
mmHg = Millimetres of Mercury
BP written = Systolic BP/Diastolic BP
Systolic BP: Highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats
Diastolic BP: lowest level your blood pressure reaches when you heart relaxes between beats
What is normal blood pressure?
120/80 mmHg
What is a high blood pressure? What are causes and symptoms?
140/90 mmHg Causes: Increased risk after heart attack or stroke Symptoms: No major signs or symptoms
What are normal Oxygen saturation?
96%+ SpO2
What is NEWS? Why is it relevant to OT?
National Early Warning Signs
It is measurements of the Bodies basic functions
It ensures that patients are physically well enough to partake in a session. NEWS should always be checked before a session
