Unit 2 Chemistry Test Flashcards
What is matter?
Matter is anything that occupies space
What is a Pure substance?
made up of only one kind of matter and has a unique
set of properties. They can be elements or compounds
ex.gold,sliver
What is a mixture?
matter that contains more than one type of particle
ex.salad dressing
What is an element?
a pure substance that cannot be broken down by any physical or chemical means into simpler substances
ex. soduim
What is a compund
two or more elements chemically bonded together.
(ex.
sodium chloride – NaCl, methane – CH 4 )
What is malleability?
is the ability of a substance, usallys metals to be deformed or molded to different shapes
What is Viscocity?
resistance of a fluid
What is soluability?
a degree of which a substance dissloves in a slovent
ex. sugar and water can be recovered
What is density?
is the amount of matter per unit volume
What is conductivity?
power of conducting heat, electricity, or sound
What is a proton?
a particle with a positive electric charge and found in the nucleoous
What is a neutron?
a particle that is in the nucleous and has no charge
what is an electron?
it is a particle outside the nucleous and has a negative charge
What is an isotope?
isotopes are a type of atom, the smallest unit of matter that retains all the chemical
What is an inoic bond?
which one atom loses valence electrons and gains them from another
What is an colvent bond?
when electrons are shared between two atoms
What is a molecular compond?
compounds held together by covalent bonds
What is a Diatomic element?
There are 7. hydrogen (H), nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), and iodine (I)
What is the different between a pure substance and a mixture?
A pure substance has one particles while the mixture has more than one type
What is the difference between an element and a compound?
An element has one type of atom while compund are formed of two or more different element.
What is the 5 things in particle theorie?
- all matter is made up of tiny particles
- each pure substances has its own type of particle
- particle attract eachother
- always moving
- particles at a higher tempature move faster than ones at a colder tempature
What are the states of matter?
- solid
- liquid
- gas
What is the different between qualitative and quantitated?
Qualitative are descriptive and quantitative are measured.
What is Homogeneous mixtures?
are solutions and have a uniform
composition.
ex.kool aid
what is Heterogeneous mixtures:?
different parts of the mixture are visible
ex. salad dressing
Different physical properties?
- colour
- taste
- texture
- odour
What does it mean when something is insouluble?
incapable of being dissolved in a liquid and especially water.
Different chemical properties?
reactivity:
-water
- acid
- another pure substance
- oxygene
What is Daltons model of an atoms?
It stated that all matter was made up of small, indivisible particles known as ‘atoms’.
What is the gold foil experiment?
A piece of gold foil was hit with alpha particles, which have a positive charge. Most alpha particles went right through. This showed that the gold atoms were mostly empty space.
What makes up the nucleous?
protons, which are positively charged, and neutrons, which are electrically neutral.
What
What are 3 trends in the periodic table?
- As you go from right to left along a row, the number of electrons increases by one.
- As you go down a column, the number of “shells” increases by one.
All of the elements in the same column, have the same number of electrons in their outermost shell
Determine what gas is produced in a chemical reaction using a splint test
When a burning splint is introduced to a sample of pure hydrogen gas, it will burn with a popping sound.
What is the different between a period and a group?
A period is a horizontal row of the periodic table and a group is the vertical coloums
What are the properties of an ionic compound?
- Metal& non metal
- ionic bond
- good conductor
- soluble(dissolves better
What are the properties of a molecular?
- 2 non metals
- covenlent(shares electrons)
- poor conductor
- non soluable
Name 2 ionic compounds and how to draw them?
- Soduim Cholride- NaCl
- tetrapotassium mononitride- K3N
Name 2 Molecular Compounds and how to draw them?
- Carbon dixoxide CO2
- Disulfur dioxide S2O2
what is Tompson model of an atom?
All atoms contain tiny negatively charged subatomic particles or electrons.
What is Rutherford model of the atom?
An atom consists of positively charged particles concentrated at the center known as the nucleus.
What is Borh’s model of the atom?
The electrons encircle the nucleus of the atom in specific allowable paths called orbits
