Unit 2 - Chemistry Flashcards
What is the Atomic # of Aluminum?
13
How many electrons, protons, and neutrons does Aluminum have?
Protons - 13
Electrons - 13
Neutrons - 14
Is Aluminum metal or non-metal? Why?
It is a metal because its on the left side of the staircase in the Periodic Table.
What type of bond would Aluminum bond with Oxygen?
They would form an ionic bond.
What are the 2 main types of bonds?
- Ionic - metal vs non-metal
2. Covalent - non-metal vs non-metal
What are the rules for naming ionic compounds?
they end in “…ide”
What are the rules for naming polyatomic compounds?
they end in “…ate” or “…ite” and the names stay the same.
What are the rules for naming molecular compounds?
they end in “…ide” and add prefixes.
What are some clues to determine a chemical reaction?
- Colour Change
- Gas/Bubbles
- Heat &/or Light is absorbed or created
- Precipitate
- New Odour
What are Molecular Compounds?
They are formed by two non-metals sharing electrons, this forms a covalent bond.
What are the prefixes from 1-10?
1 - mono 2 - di 3 - tri 4 - tetra 5 - penta 6 - hexa 7 - hepta 8 - octa 9 - nona 10 - deca
What is the difference between Acids & Bases?
Acids - pH of 0-7 - large amount of H+ ions - sour Bases - pH of 7-14 - large amounts of OH- ions
What is the pH scale?
it is used to determine the acidity of basicity of a substance.
(0-3)strong acid, (3-7) weak acid, (7) neutral, (7-10) weak base, (10-14) strong base.
