when a country takes control over another region, exploiting it for resources and imposing its own culture
Imperialism
expanding a country’s power and control over others, colonizing
Historical Globalization
time when global connections grew through exploration and trade, starting in the 1400s
Mercantilism
system where colonies provided wealth to the mother country through trade. Traders are given support from a monarch for favourable trade.
Columbian Exchange
movement of plants, animals, people, and disease between Europe (old world) and the Americas (new world)
The Transatlantic Slave Trade
forced transport of Africans to work in the Americas, triangular trade system
Capitalism
economic system, private ownership and free market competition, profit-driven
Conquistadors
Spanish soldiers who conquered American lands
Encomienda System
labor system that granted Spanish colonizers land, used Indigenous people as laborers
Mit’a System
originally an Incan system of forced labor, used by spanish colonizers for mining and construction projects
Viceroyalties
large areas of colonies managed by viceroys for the Spanish king
Cash Crops
crops grown in large amount for profit, not for eating
Chattel Slavery
form of slavery where people are owned like property to be brought and sold
The Middle Passage
brutal sea journey that carried enslaved Africans to the Americas
Abolition
the movement to end slavery
