Unit #2 Cell Cycle and Mitosis Flashcards
Cyclins
Regulate the cell cycle.
Internal regulators
Type of cyclins that respond to events inside of the cell.
Tumors
When cells divide uncontrollably, masses of cells become tumors.
External regulators
Type of cyclins that respond to events outside of the cell. Directs cells to speed up or slow down the cell cycle.
Angiogenesis
Blood vessel growth that tumors attract to surrounding tissues.
Benign
Tumor cells remain at original site. Can be removed and considered not cancerous.
Malignant
Cells break away from tumor site and begin to spread (metastasis) through the blood stream.
Chromatin
DNA is loose, relaxed, and unwound
Chromosome
Tightly wound, organized, seen in cell division, considered super coiled chromatin.
G1 phase
Cells do most of their growing during this time.
S Phase
DNA replicates so their is twice as much DNA as before.
G2 phase
Cell prepares for division by gathering the organelles and molecules needed.
Interphase
Cell spends mose of its time in this stage (90%).
Why do cells divide?
Cells can grow by increasing in size, but eventually, most cells divide after growing to a certain point.
Cell division
Process where the cell divides into two new “daughter cells.”
