Unit 2: Biological Bases of Behavior Flashcards
paul broca (broca’s area)
broca experimented on a guy named tan who could understand stuff but couldn’t speak. he found damage in the part of the brain nicknamed “broca’s area” that is correlated with language EXPRESSION
carl wernicke (wernicke’s area)
found a brain area associated with understanding of language. “wernicke’s area” is correlated with language COMPREHENSION
lesions
precise destruction of brain tissue. this practice allowed people to study the consequences of removing, cutting, or applying chemicals to certain parts of the brain
roger sperry and michael gazzaniga
studied “split brains” and found that the left and right hemispheres aren’t the same (brain lateralization)
computerized axial topography (cat/ct)
passes x-rays through the brain at various angles to show 2 dimensional slices
magnetic resonance imaging (mri)
magnetic field and radio waves emit radio frequency signals to determine the density of the tissue
electroencephalogram (eeg)
electrodes over the scalp transmit electronic brain signals (evoked potentials) to an encephalogram
positron emission tomography (pet)
produces colored graphics based on metabolic activity in a given brain region
