Define sanction. What are the two types of sanctions?
Something put in place in order to deter people from doing an unwanted behaviour again. Shows that the behaviour they did was unacceptable.

What is the legal definition of a crime?
A violation of a law.
An offence against the state that is punishable.

Define deviance
Behaviour that goes against the norms and values of society.
What are the 6 types of criminal offences that a crime can be categorised into?

Place- Jaywalking being policed more heavily in cities than small towns
Time- Smoking wasn’t illegal until July 2007
Culture- Capital Punishment is legal in many US states, but illegal in the UK
Circumstance- Age of criminal responsibility- Manslaughter vs murder
What are the two types of sanctions for criminal behaviour?
Court sanctions and non-court sanctions
Court sanctions are administered by the courts, hence the name.
Non-court sanctions are generally administered by the police.

Custodial sentence
Community Service
Financial penalty
Discharge- if the offender reoffends in a set period of time they will be arrested.

Explain how crime is a social construct.
We as a society decide what is and isn’t criminal.
Something isn’t criminal or deviant until we label it as so.
What are values?
Principles or standards of behaviour. What people consider important to them. Tell us what is right and wrong

Socially accepted standards for how we should behave, linked to values in society.
