What is the purpose of the CSEW?
To look at, and gain an understanding of the dark figure of crime- unreported crime
What methods do the CSEW use?
Voluntary survey
Mostly phone interviews
Asked a set of questions by volunteers- they have a script and are trained
Who participates in the CSEW?
Those who have been a victim of crime in the last 12 months
Give two strengths of the CSEW.
Interviews are kept anonymous- confidentiality- ethics
Dark figure of crime
Interviewers have been trained so that they ask questions in a consistent way, interview is structured so it is the same every time- making it very reliable
Give two weaknesses of the CSEW.
Telescoping can occur- participant may not have a clear memory of the event, so may not have happened within the last 12 months-causes issues with validity
Some questions may cause distress- issue with ethics
How effective is social media as a method for a campaign for change?
metoo campaign used social media and gained 1.75 million retweets in the first 24 hours, on twitter

How effective is television advertising?
Widespread- message would reach a very large audience
But they’re very expensive
