Unit 2 Flashcards
Like representation, key to how we make sense of ourselves & the world
Narrative
Narratives that belong to groups (ex: religious groups, members of nation states
Public Narratives
Individual narratives & life stories
Individual narratives & life stories
Stories about how the world marks the map held by particular groups but may transcend them
Meta-narratives
View of nation as a preexisting category, essentially an extension of kinship units. Nation has existed since human society began. Links between people in these nations are either genetic, cultural, or both. Ex: Language, religion, lifestyle, physical trait, etc.
Primordialists
Preexisting theory of nation
Primordial
Sensation linked to environment. Can be both biological & relational
Affect
Both the neurological & social/relational form have a general sense that emotions & dispositions in our environments are not predetermined, but highly influenced by a myriad of environmental factors
Affect
Theory of the nation that emphasizes the present (as opposed to recent or orient past). Focused on pop culture, media representations. Banal nationalism or performances of nationalism. Mythology of what constitutes a nation
Post-structuralist theories of the nation
Marketing research used to understand consumers’ cognitive affective or emotional responses to marketing stimuli. Considered by many to be more reliable than interviews & focus groups not because interviewees are untruthful, but because they don’t know all of the reasons why they make the consumption choices they do.
Neuromarketing
Theorists of this & emotion in social science are interested in the fact that much of our decision making takes place pre-rationally. Scholars of affect are particularly interested in the circulation of “intensities” in particular times & places - these can be understood as emotions so long as we think of them as social rather than individual (emotions being the word used for individual intensities)
