Neonate
A baby during the first month of life
NICU
Babies that have congenital problems including heart, digestive track, spine or brain
Constantly monitored for heart rate and oxygen intake
APGAR test
Checks for babies chance if survival A- activity P- pulse G- grimace A- appearance R- Respiration Done at 1 and 5 minutes after birth
Pediatrician
A doctor for newborn infants and children
Fontanels
Soft spots in the skull
Brazelton scale
Detects problems in development
Test babies interaction with environment, self soothing and response to stress.
Done up to 2 months
For parents to address needs of child
Anemia
Low level of oxygen- carrying substances in the blood
Jaundice
Makes newborn skin, tissues, and body fluid look yellow. Liver is immature
Lanugo
Very fine, soft and usually nonpigmented downy hair as can be found on the body of a fetus it newborn baby
Reflex
An automatic, unlearned behavior
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
SIDS
When healthy babies dies in their sleep for unknown reasons
To Prevent- put infant on back and keep cool
