Unit 2 Flashcards
Most commonly used glassware for heating and sterilization purposes. Characterized by a high degree of thermal resistance. Has a strain point of 515°C.
Borosilicate Glass
Examples of Borosilicate glass
Pyrex and Kimex
Chemical responsible for the high thermal resistance of borosilicate glass
Boron trioxide
Special alumina-silicate glass, strengthened chemically than thermally, 6x stronger than borosilicate,. It is also radiation resistant
Aluminosilicate Glass
Example of aluminosilicate glass
Corex
Used in optical instruments, very clear, made of pure silica
High Silica
Acid and alkali resistant, for high thermal, drasticheat shock, and extreme chemical treatment with acids (except hydrofluoric) and dilute alkali. Can be heated to 900°C
Vycor
Vycor can be heated to what temperature?
900°C
Protect material sensitive to light, amber colored.
Low actinic
Made up of soda-lime glass and a mixture of calcium, silicon, and sodium oxides.
Flint glass
Used to make disposable glassware, has poor thermal resistance, and is easy to melt
