Headright system
Def: 1618- Jamestown, Virginia. introduced to solve labor shortage. Tobacco economy.
Sig: colonists already in Virginia were granted 100 acres of land. New people that paid there own passage received 50 acres. Indentured servants worked under these people (couldn’t pay for passage). Land ownership = a reason to work hard.
Middle passage
Def: transatlantic voyage the brought slaves to the new world.
Sig: slave trade with Africa (nearby)
Slave codes
Def: 1700s. Limited rights.
Sig: gave almost absolute authority to white masters. Color determined if someone was subject to slave codes- racism.
House of burgesses
Def: 1619. First legislative assembly. In Virginia.
Sig: set up by England to make laws and taxes. (Could veto acts). Set up for future parliaments to be established.
William and Mary
Def: founded after the king and queen, one of first colonial colleges.
Sig: James Blair was the first president of the college. Founded as an Anglican institution.
Harvard university
Def: 1636. Vote of Massachusetts bay colony.
Sig: created to train Puritan ministers.
Town meetings
Def: town wide meeting to decide on issues. Choose group of people to govern the town.
Sig: restricted to adult male residents.

Def: 1600s. NEW type of sermon from Puritan leaders.
Sig: preachers noticed decline in rel. devotions in second generation. Focused on teachings of Jeremiah
Halfway covenant
Def: NEW formula to church membership. Church baptisms but not full communion.

Def: 1692- 1693. Witch trials. Launched after girls in Salem, Massachusetts claimed women had bewitched them.
Sig: twenty put to death. Governor of Massachusetts ends it because his wife is accused of witch craft.

Def: 1500s. Set of beliefs Puritans followed. John Calvin.
