Unit 2 Flashcards
Hindbrain
Medulla, pons (reticular formation), cerebellum
Midbrain
Tectum, tegmentum
Forebrain
Cortex, corpus callosum, basal ganglia, limbic system, thalamus, hypothalamus
Limbic system
Produces, doesn’t regulate, emotions. Hippocampus, amygdala, cingulate gyrus, septum, fornix, (hypothalamus)
Pons
Dreaming, electrical activity during sleep, has reticular formation (sleep regulation and arousal)
Tectum
“Roof,” pineal gland (melatonin), sensory info (visual reflexes, processes audition)
Tegmentum
“floor”, substantia nigra, endorphins, motor information, parkinson’s
SCN
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus, housed in hypothalamus, body clock
Basal ganglia
Dopamine, caudate nucleus, voluntary movements, OCD, love, addiction, reinforcement, pleasure
Hippocampus
Declarative memories, anterograde amnesia for Alzheimers, emotion, learning and memory, selective attention. Files declarative memories from short to long term
Amygdala
Fear, sex, territoriality, Kluver Bucy syndrome, odor processing
Frontal lobe
Think! Logic, reasoning, movement, planning, speech production (Broca’s area)
Parietal lobe
Feel/Touch! Somatosensory cortex, spatial awareness, hemispatial neglect if damaged
Temporal lobe
Audition processing (Wernicke’s area), amygdala, hippocampus, sex, personality, facial recognition (fuseform face area, damage=prosopagnosia)
Acetylcholine
Movement, memory, Alzheimers. Curare antagonist. Donepezil/aricept agonist (acetylcholinesterase inhibitors)
