Introspection
thinking about thinking. Examining one’s own conscious experience as objectively as possible and breaking it down into its components
Structuralism
developed by Edward Tichener, Wundt’s student. Focused on contents of mental processes and the individual parts of the mind, not their function. Introspection
William James
established functional psychology. Believed natural selection could explain behavior.
Functionalism
Studying the function of behaviors; how they help an organism fit into its environment. Also the operation of the whole mind, not its individual parts
Sigmund Freud
Developed psychoanalytic theory. Believed mental problems arose from unconscious mind; used dream analysis, slips, free association
