Grammatical hierarchy
Sentences > clauses> phrases> words
Phrase
A group of related words that does not have a subject and a verb, meaningful unit on its own
5 main types of phrases + 2 other types
Main: Noun Phrase(NP), Verb Phrase(VP), Adjective Phrase(AdjP), Adverb Phrase(AdvP), Prepositional Phrase(PP)
Other types: Absolute Phrase, Appositive phrase
Three primary elements of phrase
Head, modifier, and qualifier. Based on position in phrase modifier and qualifier can be called pre-modifier or post-modifier
Two kinds of verb phrase
Finite and non-finite
Absolute phrase
A group of words consisting of a noun or pronoun and a participle as well as any related modifiers. They do not directly connect or modify any specific word in the rest of the sentence; instead, they modify the entire sentence, adding information
Appositive phrase
A re-naming or amplification of a word that immediately precedes it
