Linguistic form
Denotes how something looks - it’s shape or appearance, and what its structure (pattern) is (phrases and clauses)
Functions
What phrases perform in larger structures which contain them(their use in actual communication) (Subject, object, predicate, etc.)
Formal categories of simple sentence
Declarative (S, V, O…), Interrogative (?), Imperative (lack of grammatical subject, the verb in its base form), Exclamative (!)
Typical functions of four basic clause types
Declarative - statement, Interrogative - question, Imperative - command, Exclamative - exclamation
Speech (illocutionary) act
The meaning intended by the speaker in the context, by which people communicate with each other:making statements, asking questions, giving directives, making an offer, etc.
Performative verbs
Verbs that show speech(illocutionary) act of sentence: promise, warned, advised….
