Adulthood
The lifespan stage from 18 years onward (in Australia)
A time of continuing physical, social, emotional, and intellectual change
Barrier
A factor that is an obstacle which may prevent or make it more difficult for people to achieve something for themselves
Such as:
- lack of money
- poor skills
- habits
- lack of knowledge
Burden of disease
A measure of the impact of diseases and injuries
It measures the gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free of disease and disability
Measured in a unit called the DALY (disability adjusted life years)
Bulk billing
when the doctor or specialist bills Medicare directly so there is no cost to the patient
Cephalocaudal law of development
the direction of development occurs from the top (head) to the bottom (toes) of the body
Core activity limitation
needing assistance with self-care, mobility and/or communication
Development
the gradual changes in an individuals physical, social, emotional and intellectual states and abilities
Developmental milestones
a task, undertaking, or event that is expected to be achieved in order to successfully progress to a further level of development
Disability adjusted life years (DALY’s)
a measure of the burden of disease
one DALY equals one year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease or injury
Embryonic stage
the second stage of prenatal development, measured from implantation (about 2 weeks after conception) until the end of the eight week after conception
emotional development
feelings andmoods and the ways in which people express, understand, and exercise control over them
