Education inflation
the idea that youth are needing more education to qualify for the same jobs in the past
Mentor
A more experienced person who assists a younger newer less experienced person, someone who can give advice.
Credentialism
seeking more education for the the value of qualifying for jobs and less for the actual knowledge and skills the job provides
Baby Boom
the cohort born between 1947 & 1966
Cohort
group of individuals in the same well-defined time period
Social History
history of ordinary people in social relationships. relies on the existing accounts from the past as primary sources
Rites of Passage
societal rituals that distinguish recognizable stages of life
eg. birth, transition to adulthood, marriage, children, retirement, …etc.
Identity
who an individual is, the characteristics that make them different from others
Ego
understanding of one’s self - introduced by Freud
Autonomous self
the ability to reflect on oneself, to accept or reject one’s values, connections, and self-defining features, and change such elements of one’s life at will.
Resocialization
ability to change old behaviors for new ones when transitioning to a new role
Anticipatory socialization
being made aware of the expectations of a new role and practicing role behavior before taking on that new role
Homeostasis
The state of equilibrum within a system, meaning that one change in a certain part of the systems, it requires everything else to change in order to stabilize again
Pay equity
equal pay for equal work
Duty-based morals
cultural value system that puts more priority on family obligations than on personal considerations when making decisions
