Unit 2 Flashcards
What is a fuel
A fuel is a substance that burns giving out energy this energy is notmally in the form of heat and light
What are fossile fuels
Fossile fuels are finite (non-renewable). Examples of these are coal oil and gaf fossil fuels consist of hydrocarbons
What dies hydrocarbon contain
Carbon and hydrogen
What happens wheb hydro carbon is burned
Carbon dioxide and water is produced
Hydrogen is an alternative fuel that burns to form water
Hydrogen comparison
Produces water only so no green house gases
Does not contribute to global warming
Hydrogen is renewable
Hydrocarbon comparison
Produce carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas) and water
Contributes to global warming
Hydrocarbons are non-renewable
Alkanes
Contain no c=c bonds and are therefore saturated
General formula for alkanes
CnH2n+2
What do carbohydrates contain
The elements carbon,hydrogen and ocygen
Examples of carbohydrates
Glucose,fructose maltose starch sucrose
How to test for starch
Add iodine to a sample of food. If starch is present that iodine changes colour from Brown To blue/black
How to test for glucose
Add Benedict’s solution To a sample a of the food And heat in a hot water bath. The colour changes from blue to orange
What are carbohydrates mainly used for
Carbohydrates are mainly used for food and drink but can be used to make fuels
What is the process called where a glucose is converted to alcohol
The process where glucose is converted to alcohol is known as fermentation
Some plants are useful and can be used to make products we use every day
