Unit 2: 1-D Kinematics Flashcards
Straight line motion
when an objects motion travels directly between two points without turning left or right (only forward/backward, upward/downward, north/south)
What do you need to know to describe the motion of an object?
the place and time (where it is located and at what time it is in that location)
motion diagram
represents the motion of an object by displaying its location at various equally spaced times on the same diagram.
coordinate system
gives location of the zero point o the variable you are studying and the direction in which the values of the variable increase
origin
the point at which the variable in the coordinate system has the value zero
position
the distance and direction from the origin to the object
distance
the entire length of an object path (even if the object moves in many directions)
displacement
change in position from initial position to final position
displacement
change in position from initial position to final position
magnitude
the maximum extent of size and the direction of an object
vector
a quantity that has both magnitude and direction
scalar
A quantity that is just a number without direction
time interval
The difference between two times
resultant
A vector that represents the sum of two other vectors
position time graph
when data is plotted on a horizontal axis and the position data is plotted on a vertical axis
