Unit 1C - Coastal Landscapes in the UK - Transportation and deposition Flashcards
Deposition definition?
Sea loses energy, dropping sediment it has been transporting
Transportation definition?
Movement of material along coastline
Four ways of transportation?
Traction, saltation, suspension and solution
Explain process of traction?
Pebbles and larger sediment rolled along sea/river bed
Explain process of solution?
Soluble materials dissolve in water and carried along
Explain process of saltation?
Pebble-sized load bounced along sea/river bed by force of water
Explain process of suspension?
Small particles carried in water, e.g. silts and clays, which can make the water look cloudy
Name other way material is transported along coast and definition of this?
Longshore drift - prevailing wind direction causes waves to approach coast at angle with swash pushing material at same angle. Backwash then drags material down beach under gravity. Zig-zag movement. Repeat
2 things that increase amount of material that’s deposited on an area of coast?
- there’s lots of erosion elsewhere on coast, so there’s lots of material available
- there’s lots of transportation of material into area
Constructive wave characteristics? Height, frequency, swash and backwash strength
Low height and frequency, strong swash and weak backwash
What is fetch?
Maximum distance of open water over which wind can blow. Longer fetch = a larger wave
