Unit 1A - Weather hazards Flashcards
Define wind?
large scale movements of air caused by differences in air pressure
What are differences in air caused by?
differences in temperature between the equator and all the poles
Where does wind move?
from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
What is wind a part of?
global atmospheric circulation loops or cells
How is a low pressure belt with rising air, clouds and rain caused?
at the equator the sun warms the earth, transferring heat to the air above, causing it to rise
At what point does the air cool and move out?
30 degrees
At what point of the equator does the cool air sink, creating a high pressure belt with cloudless skies and little rainfall?
30 degrees north and south
What happens at 60 degrees north and south of the equator?
warmer surface winds meet colder air from the poles
Some of air moves back towards the equator, and the rest moves towards the…?
poles
What does global atmospheric circulation causes?
areas to have some types of weather more often than others - effecting the climate
At what temperature do tropical storms form?
27 degrees or higher
What happens when warm, moist air rises and condensation occurs?
releases huge amounts of energy, making storms powerful, surface winds increased
Where do tropical storms move?
the west, easterly winds near the equator
What does the earth’s rotation deflect?
paths of the wind, causes storms to spin
