Unit 1A - Tectonic Hazards - Plates, volcanoes and earthquakes Flashcards
Natural Hazard definition?
Any natural event that has potential to endanger people, economy and property.
Two main types of natural hazards and differences?
Geological - caused by land and tectonic processes
Meteorological - caused by weather and climate
3 factors affecting hazard risk?
Vulnerability, capacity to cope and nature of natural hazard
Difference between primary and secondary effects of earthquake?
Primary - direct result of ground shaking
Secondary - result of primary
What happens at destructive plate boundary?
Plates move towards each other and oceanic plate subducted under continental plate, leading to friction causing earthquake. As it subducts, it melts and magma rises through vents.
What happens at constructive plate boundary?
Plates move apart and magma from mantle rises through gap, leading to earthquake and volcano eruption or formation when cools
What happens at conservative plate boundary? Example of fault?
Plates slide past each other and get stuck. When pressure is released an earthquake occurs.
San Andreas fault
What can be created from destructive plate boundaries? How?
Fold mountains - continental is crumpled
Two islands that have been created from constructive?
Hawaii and Iceland
Which is denser, oceanic or continental crust?
Oceanic
What causes plates to move?
Convection currents
Where do earthquakes take place?
At any plate boundary and anywhere
At what two plate boundaries do volcanoes occur?
Destructive and Constructive
