Unit 1A - Climate Change - Managing climate change: mitigation and adaptation Flashcards
Climate change adaption definition?
Actions taken to adjust to natural events such as climate change
Mitigation definition?
Actions taken to reduce or eliminate the long term risk to human life and property from natural haazards
3 ways we can mitigate against climate change?
Carbon capture and planting trees, alternative energy and international agreements
What is carbon capture?
Trapping CO2 when it is released burning fossil fuels
How does planting trees help?
Trees take CO2 out of atmosphere
What is alternative energy?
Clean, renewable energy e.g. solar, wind
What are international agreements?
Countries agree to cut emissions e.g. Durban 2011
3 ways we can adapt to climate change?
Manage water supplies, change agriculture and reduce risk from sea level rise
How are we going to reduce risk from sea level rise? 2
Build more coastal defences. UK abandon areas at risk from coastal flooding
3 reasons why water is becoming scarcer?
Population increase, agriculture demands and water pollution
3 ways we are managing water to adapt to climate change?
Desalinisation, reservoirs, water saving machines
3 ways we are changing agriculture to adapt to climate change?
- Altering species farmed
- Using genetically modified crops
- Draining water to prevent water logging, erosion, and nutrient leaching where rainfall increases
