Unit 1.4 Properties Flashcards
What do ionic compounds form?
A lattice structure
What structure is an ionic lattice
A cube like structure
What does a lattice structure create?
Compounds with a high melting point which conduct when molten or in solution but never when solid
Do ionic compounds dissolve In water easily?
Yes
What happens when ionic compounds dissolve In water?
Their lattice breaks up completely to form free ions, enabling them to conduct electricity as the ions are free to carry the electrical charge.
What is there melting point like and why?
They have a high melting point because to melt an ionic compound the strong ionic bonds must be broken which requires lots of energy
What are the two types of covalent substances?
Covalent network and covalent molecular
What is the substance of a covalent network like?
Very high melting points, boiling points and are very hard
What is an example of a covalent network?
Diamond, used in cutting tools for cutting through rock
