Unit 14: Inferential Statistics and Hypothesis Testing Flashcards
Inferential Statistics
Procedures for drawing conclusions based on sample data
Hypothesis Testing
Used to determine whether hypothesis is supported or rejected by the results
The Null Hypothesis
Establishes there is no significant difference between two groups
Ho : Ua = Ub
Reject the null
The Alternative Hypothesis
Predicts a significant difference between groups
Hc : Ua does not equal Ub
Fail to reject the null
Two Tailed Hypothesis
Predicts groups differ but does not specify a direction
One Tailed Hypothesis
Predicting direction of expected results
Type 1 Error
Predicting a significant difference in the results where there is no difference between the results (more serious)
Type 2 Error
Predict no difference between groups when there is a significant difference
Statistical Difference
Probability the results are not due to chance
P-Value or Alpha Level
Acceptable level of error
0.05
Confidence Interval
An interval of certain width which we know will contain the population mean when we know the sample mean
(95%)
Statistical Power
The ability to find statistically significant differences when they do exist
