Unit 1.4) Energy concepts Flashcards

1
Q

Define work done?

A

The energy transferred in moving an object. It is the product of the magnitude of the force and the distance moved in the direction of the force, when the force is constant.

Q

FxCos(0) = ?

A

The work done or the energy transferred.
F = force(N), x = distance moved(m), 0 = angle between the force and the line of motion.

Remember to convert to metres or seconds depending on the question try to remember the units of what you are answering.

Q

What is meant by friction?

A

A resistance to motion between an object and a surface or an object moving through a fluid. Friction is a force that acts in the opposite direction to the movement.

Q

Define elastic potential energy and give the formula

A

The energy stored by an object as a result of a reversible change in its shape.
Ep = 1/2kx^2
(x is the extension and k is the spring constant)

Q

What is meant by the principle of conservation of energy?

A

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred into other forms of energy.
Therefore the total energy in a closed system will always remain the same.

Q

A river flowing to the right acts on a crossing boat with force 19N. The boat provides a perpendicular thrust of 45N. What is the magnitude and direction of the resultant force on the boat?

A

Forces are perpendicular so use Pythagoras theorem
(Resultant force)^2 = 19^2 + 45^2
Resultant force = 48.84 = 49N(2s.f.)

Direction, tan0 = 45/19
0 = tan^-1(45/19) = 67 degrees
tan0 = 67
