Skills Inventory
An inventory of the skills and knowledge of employees that is used for making placement and promotion decisions.
Succession Planning
The process of deciding how management vacancies will be filled.
Goal: Have highly trained replacements ready to fill vacant positions in all key jobs.
Major Activities:
- Information about managerial candidates should be reviewed, including such factors as career progress, experience, education, and future career interests.
- The performances of prospective managers need to be assessed to determine whether they already are promotable or, if not, what developmental experiences they need to prepare for advancement.
- the requirements for each position need to be determined
- The responsible managers at each level in the organization should conduct a thorough review and discussion of the foregoing information
- Developmental activities should be initiated to accomplish the identified needs.
Replacement Chart
An organizational chart showing the employees who hold various positions and their most likely replacements.
Career Pathing
Identifying a sequence of jobs through which individuals can expect to progress toward higher levels of management.
Dual career ladders
A career path for technical and professional employees that allows them to progress within the ranks of their profession rather than having them advance within the managerial hierarchy of the company.
Bumping
A layoff procedure that allows more senior employees to take the jobs of employees with less seniority
Promotion form Within
An internal recruiting method in which vacancies in management positions are filled by promoting lower-level managers
Attrition
Reducing the workforce by failing to replace individuals who leave.
Shared Work
Short-term labor surplus leading to a reduction of hours each employee works but all employees are kept.
Rolling Layoffs
Workers rotate in and out of unemployment
