Define Common Assault?
Assault is committed when the defendant intentionally/recklessly causes the victim to apprehend immediate unlawful personal violence.
Personal reasons for not reporting Common Assault?
The personal reasons may include fear of the offender, or possibly for certain victims they may feel a sense of shame to report it depending on the circumstances.
Social reasons for not reporting Common Assault?
Socially, they may be a lack of knowledge of the crime, as it could happen behind closed doors.
Define Domestic Abuse?
Involves the use of violence, abuse or threatening behaviour against a partner, ex-partner or family member. Can be physical, emotion or financial abuse.
Reasons for not reporting Domestic Abuse?
Similarly, to assault, the fear of the offender is possibly even greater in domestic abuse situations as they are usually related and could react badly in response to being reported. (Or the victim could be too young to understand how to report the crime.)
Define Vandalism (Criminal Damages).
Vandalism is the destruction or criminal damage to a property belonging to another individual e.g. smashing a window or graffiti
What are personal reasons for not reporting Vandalism?
Personal reasons would most lightly include disinterest/not being affected as some people may feel that it does not affect them or may not be bothered to report it as they feel it is a less “serve” crime.
And a lack of media interest due to more important crimes taking up interest.
What is the UK legal definition of Rape?
A type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration against/without a person consent.
What reasons could an individual have for not reporting Rape?
The two most common reasons would include lack of knowledge due to it usually, happening without multiple witnesses. The victim will also lightly have a fear to report the crime as they feel the offender may bring harm to them.
May feel emotionally traumatized by the event and not want to discuss the indecent.
Definition of Honour Crimes?
Involve violence toward the victim due to certain beliefs by a family or certain community
Reasons for not reporting Honour Crimes?
The most likely reason for these types of crimes not being reported are since most communities will isolate the individual from the public, or the victim may have a language barrier to report (or may not even know where to report the crime.
This is also a culture bound crime and public knowledge of the situation will be limited at best, which makes it difficult for an outsider to report it.
Definition of a white collar crime?
A Non-violent crime committed in a commercial environment for financial gain
Reasons for not reporting white collar crimes?
The complexity of white-collar crimes (such as Ponzi schemes) makes it difficult for the public to report the crime, as they may not understand it or even know it exists.
Another issue is the lack of knowledge of the crime that is being committed. However, there tend not to be too many personal reasons not to report the crime.
Definition of a Hate Crime?
Is a crime which occurs as a result of prejudice or hostility towards a person’s race, religion disability etc.
Reasons for not reporting a Hate Crime?
Most common reasons for Hate Crimes not being reported could include fear, or lack of knowledge of the way the law can be enforced to counter different types of hate-crime
