Unit 1.1.b The Structure and functions of the muscular system Flashcards
To know the three types of muscles in the body and the functions of each muscle.
Smooth Muscles
Found in the internal organs and blood vessels - this is involuntary
Cardiac Muscles
Found only in the heart- this is voluntary.
Skeletal Muscles
Attached to the skeleton - this is voluntary
Involuntary Muscles
Not under our conscious control which means we can’t. make them contract when we think about it.
Voluntary Muscles
Are under our conscious control so we can move these muscles when we want to. These are the muscles we use to make all the movements needed for physical activity and sport.
Deltoid
Lifting the arm at the shoulder (the deltoid muscle has different arts which flex, extend and abduct the shoulder joint)
For example, lifting the arm to block a volley ball; upward arm swinging when trampolining.
Trapezius
Shoulder horizontal extension (moving the arms backwards at shoulder level)
For example, preparation phase of an overarm badminton smash.
Pectorals
Adduction of the shoulder (moving the arm towards the body); Shoulder horizontal flexion (moving the arms forwards in front of the body)
For example, the upwards phase of a press up; rugby player making a tackle.
Triceps
Extension of the elbow (straightening the arm)
For example, shooting and chest passing in netball (execution phase).
Biceps
Flexion of the elbow (bending the arm)
For example, drawing a bow in archery; ‘backstretch’ position during tennis serve.
Abdominals
Flexion of the spine (sitting upwards).
For example, performing a sit up or a forward roll.
Latissimus dorsi
Adduction of the shoulder (moving the a
